November 9, 2013 - 37th Annual Edgewood Heritage Festival. Set among the log cabins and park, visitors will enjoy Texas music, arts and crafts, the annual classic car show, tractor show, and quilt show…all while enjoying while enjoying great food and entertainment. The kiddos will have fun on the rides in the carnival area, sliding and bouncing in the giant “blow-up” slides and bounce houses. Pony rides, train rides, and wagon rides in and around the park are great fun for everyone!Located in Edgewood, Texas at Highway 80 and 859 just 7 miles north of Canton, Texas. "Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming", a gospel musical comedy, is onstage live at the Carroll Green Civic Center in Quitman. Friday and Saturday at 7:30, with a final Sunday matinee at 2pm on the 10th. Tickets $12, available at the door. Come and enjoy lots of live, peppy gospel tunes enfolded within a very funny and touching comedy.
Saturday: The Great American Peanut Butter Festival: Vendors, kids games and activities, live music, and an attempt to make the world's longest peanut butter and jelly sandwich! Over 70 tables will be lined up in downtown Grand Saline, and attendees will be able to participate in making the record breaking sandwich. More details at the website, found here.
25th annual Heritage Syrup Festival - Saturday from 9am-5pm. The Sweetest Festival in Texas! A folklife festival where syrup making demonstration is the focus but 35 folk artists show their skills as well. On the grounds of the Depot Museum there are demonstrations of the sawmill, print shop, broom and blacksmith shops. Antique tractors and engines line the yard also. You can even take a ride on the carousel, all while listening to a variety of live performances of country, bluegrass, and folk music. Then catch the hayride shuttle to downtown for other live bands performing. There are hundreds of booths for shopping, children's activities, antique car show and both locations have great food. Tyler Museum of Art: Works featured in the Day of the Dead Middle School Art Exhibition will be on display through Sunday, November 10 – which also marks the opening day of Celebration of Life and Death: Selections from the Boeckman Collection of Mexican Folk Art. This exhibition, also open to the public with free admission, features more than 75 pieces drawn from a large collection donated to TMA by Laura and Dan Boeckman. Seventh Annual Bambi Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. at Faulkner Park located at 410 W. Cumberland Rd. Registration begins at 8am. For more info: (903) 531-1214 or (903) 531-1377. The Fun Run/Walk is open to adults and youth ages 6 and up. The entry fee is $15 per participant, with all proceeds benefiting Tyler Parks and Recreation programming for youth, adults and seniors.
Improve your health and have fun at the second annual free 5K Hope Run set for the morning of Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, on the wooded campus of UT Health Northeast, located at the corner of U.S. 271 and Texas Highway 155. More than 750 runners, walkers, and ramblers are expected to attend the 5K run, the 1-mile walk, or participate in activities for the whole family, including a car show and bounce house. All events are free. UT Health President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun will open the 5K race, which begins at 8 a.m., and the 1-mile walk or run, which begins at 8:30 a.m. The 5K will follow a winding course through the forest of pines that cover most of UT Health’s 600 acres, while the 1 mile course will take walkers across its beautiful campus. There is no cost to enter the race, but registration is required. You may register online at uthealth.org; on-site registration begins at 7 a.m. For more information, call (903) 877-7575. Fall Trash Bash and Longview Recycles Day Saturday; Sears parking lot of the Longview Mall, 3500 McCann Road. The events, held in conjunction with America Recycles Day, encourage residents to recycle unwanted items and volunteer to help clean the community.
Longview Recycles Day will offer recycling for electronics, including TVs. Recycling will also be available for glass, motor oil & filters, plastic bags, batteries, ink cartridges, paper, cardboard, plastic and metal cans. Tire Recycling will also be available but will require a current water bill and drivers' license for proof of Longview residence. In addition, the Lion's Club will be accepting used eyeglasses. Habitat for Humanity will be accepting donations of building materials, lumber and scrap metal. Paper shredding services will also be provided for Longview residents.
